About Singapore Bouldering League (SBL) 2010

The Singapore Bouldering League is endorsed by the Singapore Sports Council (SSC).

SBL is organised by SCA, and we’ll like to thank Gravical by SMU, Boulderactive by NUS and Pumpfest by NTU for being a part of the league.

This year, we are proudly endorsed by Singapore Sports Council, and we look forward to bringing you more excitement, and dynamic madness.

The bouldering competitions in this year’s league series include:-

1.  4th to 7th March – GRAVICAL by Singapore Management University

2.  12th to 14th March – BOULDERACTIVE by National University of Singapore

3.  28th to 29th May – PUMPFEST by Nanyang Technological University

While 2009 is a success in its own right, SCA is not resting on its laurels.  For SBL 2010, expect -

  1. Less waiting time for the Novice category, as we introduce the “Flash” format.
  2. The highly anticipated/contested “Varsity Bouldering Cup”(VBC), and “JC Bouldering League”(JBL).
  3. Lots of interesting volumes that will change the way you climb!
  4. An online registration platform for all league competitions

and lots more.  Along the way, we have also made some changes -

  1. Climbers in the Open category will no longer have their ranking adjusted to exclude foreign competitors.  So only the raw ranking/points will be tabulated.
  2. SCA can only nominate the SBL Champions for the Asian Climbing Championships 2010.  In the event that SMF refuses to endorse the best boulderers in Singapore, a cash prize of $500 will be awarded to the Top Male and Female Champions instead.
  3. All Junior College student will be eligible for the Novice category, which will also serve as a ranking competition for the Junior College Bouldering League.  However, those JC students who belong to the Intermediate/Open categories will not be allowed to proceed to the Novice Finals.

Varsity Bouldering Cup (VBC)

NUS has a long climbing culture of producing strong climbers.  NTU is revitalising their climbing club by having a competitive climbing team, plus their influx of new Open Women climbers.  SMU, new to the game, will be boosted by newcomer to SMU but not to the sport, Ex-national youth climber – Ron Ho.  This volatile mix of variables can only make for an exciting season of fierce competition from all 3 varsities.  At stake, is the Varsity Bouldering Cup which the champion will get to keep, until next year’s VBC again.  Winning it for 3 times in a row will mean getting to keep it!

How it works

  1. The Open category will also serve as the Varsity category.
  2. A separate set of results will be extracted from the Open results to include only Varsity students.
  3. From the resulting ranking, students will be allocated points according to the CURS.
  4. Only the points from the Top 2 male and Top 2 female from each Varsity will be tabulated.
  5. The Varsity with the highest score accumulated from Gravical, Boulderactive and Pumpfest wins!

Q&A

1.  Why only the Varsity?  What about our Polys and ITEs?!

Ans: Because of limited resources.  SCA is open to anyone or any organisation who are keen to sponsor a league for the Poly and ITE.

2.  Why only include climbers in the Open category?  Why can’t Novice climbers score for their Varsity too?

Ans: Because 2 of the Varsity in the League are new to having a Competitive Team.  As such, they do not have the numbers to compete against the seasoned veteran team from NUS.  For next year, the VBC may include climbers from all categories instead.

3.  Is the VBC recognised by SUNIG (Singapore University Games)?

Ans: Not at the moment…

Flash Format

Having more participants than the World Cup and World Championships has its drawbacks. It meant 7-9 hours of isolation, 3min climbing time only, and for the last climber, climbing alone in the dark.

Well, not anymore!   With the Flash format, you can reduce your chances of catching H1N1 (during isolation with 100+ others), do away with waiting for hours in isolation, look at your friends climb and even be climbing with them!

How Flash format works -
On competition day,
1. Register as per usual.
2. Report to the designated area for briefing and demonstration climb.
3. Climbing ‘details’ will be released. Check your ‘detail’ and report to the holding area at the specified time.
4. Watch demonstration climb.
5. 1st and 2nd detail are to report to the holding area immediately after demonstration climb.
6. While waiting for your reporting time, go catch a movie, have breakfast, study, etc.
7. Report to the holding area, collect score card and get ‘numbered’.
8. 1 min before climbing time, move onto climbing area.
9. At 3 whistle blow, commence your climbing.
10. Your climb ends in 19mins.

Rules and Regulations (R&R)

1.  Competitors can watch other climbers climb.

2.  Spectators and participants may NOT prompt the climbers on the wall.

3.  There is a 1 minute max climbing time on each attempt.  After which a climber must re-attempt the route (if it has not been completed).

4.  Climbers can only touch the starting hold.  Each touch on the other holds will constitute as 1 attempt.

5.  Scoring and ranking is as per IFSC R&R.  i.e. Bonus/Top, No.of Tops, Attempts to Top, No.of Bonus, Attempts to Bonus.

6.  Each detail shall consist of between 12 to 17 climbers.

7.  Climbers may not exit the competition area till the end of climbing time.

8.  Climbers MUST submit their score card before exiting.

During Competition

1.  Climbing sequence - Competitors are to submit their score cards and await their turns on the problem.  Competitors may not retrieve their score until their turn ends.

2.  Spotting - Competitors are to “spot” their fellow climber.s.

3.  Climbing time – Competitors have 19mins to complete all climbs.  A whistle will be blown at the 18th min to signal 1 min of climbing time left.  2 whistles will be blown at the 19th min to signal end of climbing time.  Competitors MUST stop climbing, SUBMIT their score cards and exit the competition area.

4.  3 whistle blows at the 20th min will announce the start of the next detail.
