Asian Youth Series Hong Kong (HKG) 23-24 Jan 2010

Written by Ben Toh.  This article is not representative of the views of sgclimb.com or SCA.

Organised by the Hong Kong Sport Climbing Union,

The bouldering competition for youths took place last weekend in Hong Kong.  2 well-known names from our region were there, Ms.Joanne Soo (IFSC International Judge) and Mr.Francis Lo from Malaysia (IFSC Continental Route-setter).

It is saddening that a regional Youth Bouldering Championships, represented by Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, Malaysia and Philippines has no Singapore representatives, except as an official.  It would have been the perfect opportunity to expose our burgeoning Youth climbers to international climbing standards, and perhaps, inspire them to train harder.

Flying to Hong Kong wouldn’t be expensive, plus there is no entry fee!  So why the hell didn’t we send any representatives?!

I would have paid for Marcus Yeo’s air ticket just to see him compete against the the regions best youth athletes!

But alas, the decision was SMF’s to make.  So why didn’t they send?  Don’t bother asking.

Instead of lamenting on what could have been, perhaps we should all look forward to the upcoming Singapore Bouldering League.  Remember, this league is created for our Singapore climbers!

Psyching up for 2010 – Videos from IFSC Climbing Worldcup

Credit to Udo “udini” Neumann for the good work.  Please visit his Channel at www.youtube.com/user/therealudini or his personal site at http://www.udini.de/.

“It is the nature of human progress that we learn. By watching the clips posted here and elsewhere, we will learn about climbing and therefore improve. Somewhere in the world a talented girl or boy, say 12 years old, who watches Adam, Johanna, Chris and all the other great climbers of our time, will be a far better climber in five years time than those guys ever could be!

So read on, watch those clips, watch them again, discuss them – we will keep on making them, for the future of climbing!”

SCA salutes Neumann, and is inspired to continue our work to make climbing better, also for the future of climbing, starting in Singapore.  Watching the climbers from Xinmin Secondary, I dare wager that we can be the best in  Southeast Asia in 4 years time, maybe less.  And soon after that, our first Asian Championships no.1!  Allez all!

Watch the videos, go climb, train hard, prepare yourself for what’s coming in 2010.
